Thoreau began to walk the Outer Cape in 1849. In his journals, he describes the sea-shore as a “ sort of neutral ground, a most advantageous point from which to contemplate this world.” It still is. I am privileged to spend summers in Wellfleet, a small village on the outer cape. Away from the city, I live by the rhythm of the tides, and mark time by the sunrise over the ocean and the sun set across the bay. In the early morning, wild turkeys cause a traffic jam on a country road A red fox strolls by. Piping plovers hurry to their nests. Dogs run with abandon across the sand. I slow down and contemplate this magic place.
