Green Mountain Girls

Many years ago, I found a set of photographs from the early 1900’s in an antique store in Vermont. The photos depicted a group of young women on a rural farm, boldly looking into the camera, as they dressed up in men’s suits and hats, smoked pipes and cigars ,and otherwise flaunted the gender norms of their time. Who they were and how did their day of rebellion come to be? Was the day a turning point in their lives, or just a lark? What happened next? Were they discovered? Who ran and who stood their ground? In this series, I imagine the story of the Green Mountain Girls. This is a work in progress.
